Guide To Jailbreaking Your iDevice

As we all know Jailbreaking your iDevice is a process that opens up your device to apps not approved by Apple but that open up your device to a whole new world of upgrades and customization. And with each new iOS upgrade that is released Jailbreaking changes as well, so what i am going to write this guide to help those interested in the process so that they can Jailbreak their own device or that of a loved one.

First things first as of now their is a new untethered jailbreak available which means that you wont have to have your iDevice connected to a computer to reboot it. This was the case for a while with iOS 5 with the exception of SemiTether which allowed users to reboot their device away from a computer with limited functionality until a tethered reboot was possible. I highly recommend that if your going to Jailbreak your device that you use the untethered method as it is the most friendly and versatile method available. Otherwise your going to have to carry around a laptop where ever you go just in case you need to restart your phone and we all know thats not going to happen.

So lets start the Process here:

Your going to need any A4 iOS device such as iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad, and iPod Touch. There is no current Jailbreak available for iPad 2 or iPhone 4S as they use the A5 chip which is currently not supported. Next your iDevice has to have iOS 5.0.1 installed and not iOS 5.0

Step 1: Make sure your running iOS 5.0.1 and Download Redsn0w 0.9.10b1

Step 2: Run Redsn0w and make sure that your iPhone is off and plugged into your computer

Step 3: Once you have your plugged in and have Redsn0w open you’ll see a Jailbreak button. Go ahead and click it But be ready to follow directions once you do. This is where you’ll be prompted to follow a sequence.

Step 4: This is pretty straight forward, follow the on screen directions. Hold down the power button of your iDevice for 3 seconds, then while continuing to hold the power button hold down the home button as well for 10 seconds. Then release the power button and continue to hold the home button until it prompts you that your device is being exploited.

Step 5: After it is done running the exploit it will redsn0w will ask you which options you’ll like fo do for this jailbreak. By default only cydia is checked in and if your not running and iPad then you wont have to enable gestures or anything so your pretty much all set to go.

Step 6: Now just sit back and relax while your iDevice finishes the process and reboots. After it’s rebooted you will see the Cydia icon on your phone. Go ahead and open it and you’ll see a whole new store full of awesome tweaks and customizations that will make your iDevice a bit cooler that others.

Now that your iDevice is Jailbroken you’ll get to enjoy all of the full potential that your phone has that isn’t fully available to the public yet. You’ll be able to have a custom lock screen, enable more functionality from the notifications bar and block or enable certain features on your phone that weren’t there before. One such ridiculous example i can remember was when you had to Jailbreak your phone to add copy/paste functionality to your iPhone which was ridiculous since every other device out at the time long since had that feature. Well go out and enjoy your iDevice.
